Starting Your Teaching Career as an ECT
Starting your first teaching role as an Early Career Teacher (ECT) is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel overwhelming. From lesson planning to behaviour management, balancing classroom life with ongoing professional development is no small task. At Flourish Education, we’re here to guide you through your ECT induction with confidence, care and clarity.
In this guide, we explore what to expect in your ECT years, the support you're entitled to, and how to thrive as you take your first steps in your teaching career.

What Is the ECT Induction?
What is the purpose of the induction period?
Your ECT induction is a statutory, two-year period designed to bridge the gap between initial teacher training and becoming a fully qualified teacher. It's not only about proving your capability in the classroom – it’s a supported journey of growth, reflection and practical learning.
What Support Are ECTs Entitled To?
- 10% extra non-contact time in Year 1, and 5% in Year 2
- A named mentor with scheduled, timetabled support sessions
- A structured Early Career Framework (ECF) programme, delivered by your school or an external provider
- Two formal assessment points – typically at the end of terms 3 and 6 – with regular informal reviews in between
- A "no surprises" approach to feedback – performance should be discussed openly and regularly
These entitlements ensure you’re not alone as you navigate the first years of your career.
How to Choose the Right School as an ECT
What should I look for in a school?
- Location – Commute times can impact your energy and wellbeing.
- Size and structure – Consider whether you’d prefer a smaller, close-knit team or a larger school with wider progression opportunities.
- Culture and ethos – Every school has a different feel. Flourish can help match you to schools where you’ll feel supported and valued.
- Opportunities – Does the school offer career progression, CPD and peer learning?
At Flourish Education, we work closely with schools across the West Midlands and beyond to help you find your perfect match.
How to Make the Most of Your Mentor
What does a great mentor do?
- Provides honest, constructive feedback
- Encourages reflection and growth
- Offers time management tips
- Models excellent practice
- Supports your wellbeing and helps manage stress
Top tip: Make your mentor meetings count by coming prepared with questions, challenges and reflections.
Tips for Thriving During Your ECT Years
- Be organised – Have digital or physical folders set up each term.
- Set work/life boundaries – Your wellbeing matters. Allocate non-work time and protect it.
- Ask questions – No question is too small. Communication is key.
- Build your professional network – Join the staffroom chats, attend CPD and stay connected.
- Celebrate small wins – Teaching is full of challenges, but don’t overlook the daily successes.
- Be patient – It takes time to settle in and see the impact you’re making.
Remember: Growth takes time. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.
What Do Observation Lessons Really Mean?
Observation lessons shouldn't feel like performances. They are designed to reflect your everyday practice. When planning, ask yourself:
- What should my pupils learn?
- How will they learn it?
- How will I know they’ve learnt it?
- Would I teach this way on any other day?
Stick to what works for you and your pupils – authenticity matters.
Prioritising Your Wellbeing as an ECT
Teaching is rewarding, but it’s also demanding. Protect your wellbeing by:
- Scheduling downtime
- Continuing hobbies outside of school
- Getting enough rest
- Saying “no” when you need to
- Talking to others when things get tough
Mental health matters. It’s not a luxury – it’s a necessity.
FAQs for ECTs
What does ECT stand for?
ECT stands for Early Career Teacher – a newly qualified teacher in their first two years of teaching.
Can I complete my ECT induction via supply teaching?
Yes, many ECTs complete part or all of their induction via long-term supply placements. At Flourish, we offer flexible supply options that can count towards your induction.
What happens if I change schools during induction?
Your progress is recorded and can be continued at your new school, so you won’t lose credit for the work you’ve already completed.
What if I’m struggling?
You’re not alone. Speak with your mentor, school induction lead or your Flourish consultant. Early support is key.
