SEN Teaching Assistant

Job Description

We’re currently seeking SEN Teaching Assistants to join our team and support a range of specialist SEND schools across Birmingham. This is a highly rewarding role that provides the opportunity to work with pupils who have a variety of complex and additional needs, including Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Hearing Impairments (HI), Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties (BESD), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), and other learning requirements.

The SEN Teaching Assistant Role:
 
  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEND including moderate learning disabilities (MLD),  Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties (BESD), and Hearing Impairments (HI)  
  • Implement strategies to support behaviour, emotional regulation and individual learning outcomes
  • Work closely with class teachers, SENCOs and external professionals to meet EHCP goals
  • Help create a safe, inclusive and stimulating learning environment
  • Support pupils with personal care or physical needs, where required
  • The ability to use visual aids, hearing technology and other adaptations to support access to learning 
  • Promote independence, confidence and resilience in learners
  • Experience or training in British Sign Language (BSL) (Level 1 or above desirable).
We welcome applications from candidates with experience in any of the following roles:
  • SEN Teaching Assistant, SEND TA, Learning Support Assistant (LSA), Teaching Assistant, 1:1 TA, Behaviour Mentor
  • Experience working in a special school, PRU, alternative provision or inclusive mainstream school
  • Strong understanding of SEND, particularly supporting pupils with Moderate Learning Difficulty (MLD), Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties (BESD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Hearing Impairments (HI)   
  • Empathetic, adaptable and resilient approach
  • Excellent behaviour management strategies
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Relevant training such as Team Teach, Makaton or PECS is desirable but not essential

These schools are well-resourced, provide on-site parking, and are easily accessible from nearby areas such as Handsworth, Smethwick, Bearwood, Quinton, Harborne, Edgbaston, Winson Green, and West Bromwich.
