Job Description

We are recruiting for a SEN Teaching Assistant to join a highly supportive and well-resourced Special Educational Needs (SEN) School in Erdington. This is a long-term, full-time position, starting as soon as possible, working with pupils aged from Early Years to Further Education  supporting them with the needs of complex physical disabilities and medical conditions.   

This role is ideal for a Teaching Assistant with a strong background in Physical Disabilities and a background of administering medication who is passionate about supporting children with additional and complex needs. Pupils may also present with ASD and other associated needs, and many are working below age-related expectations. Behaviour can be challenging at times, so the school is seeking someone who is calm, resilient, confident, and consistent, with a positive and proactive approach to behaviour management.

As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with the class teacher to support the delivery of learning across the curriculum, while providing targeted 1:1 and small-group support. You will play a key role in helping to create a structured, safe, and nurturing learning environment, supporting pupils to regulate their emotions, develop social skills, and engage positively with learning.

This is a full-time role, Monday to Friday, 8:15am – 3:15pm, offering the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a specialist education setting.
 
Required Skills and Experience for this SEN Teaching Assistant Role:  

  • Experience supporting pupils with Physical Needs, including children who may present with complex medical needs & regulation difficulties and Learning Disabilities, with the ability to apply effective de-escalation and regulation strategies.
  • A strong understanding of behaviour support approaches and therapeutic or trauma-informed practices to meet individual pupil needs.
  • Previous experience working in a specialist SEN setting, PRU, alternative provision, or inclusive mainstream school, supporting pupils with social, emotional, and behavioural needs.
  • Confidence in providing 1:1 and small-group support, adapting learning activities to suit individual abilities and learning styles.
  • Ability to work closely with the class teacher and wider support team to help deliver structured, engaging, and differentiated learning activities.
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach, with the ability to build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
  • Up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
 
The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will receive a £150 welcome bonus*, paid automatically once you’ve completed 30 consecutive working days in your role. *Bonus applies to this full-time role only, and terms and conditions apply.

  • Daily pay rate of £92.56 – £100, depending on experience and responsibilities - Equivalent annual salary of approximately £18,049.2 – £19,500, based on term-time working

We are currently supporting a specialist SEN school based in Erdington, dedicated to meeting the needs of pupils with complex learning difficulties and physical disabilities. The school supports children and young people with a wide range of needs, including profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), communication needs, and complex medical requirements. 
 
The school is conveniently located in Erdington, making it easily accessible for professionals commuting from areas such as Sutton Coldfield, Castle Bromwich, Great Barr, Kingstanding, and the wider Birmingham region. With strong public transport links and on-site parking available, the setting is straightforward to reach whether travelling by car or public transport.
