Teacher of the Deaf

Job Description

Flourish Education are recruiting for a Teacher of the Deaf to join a welcoming specialist secondary school in North Birmingham for students aged 11–19 with hearing impairment.

The school provides a highly inclusive learning environment where pupils access the curriculum through a total communication approach, including British Sign Language (BSL), spoken English and Sign Supported English (SSE), tailored to meet individual needs. Staff are committed to developing students' communication, confidence, independence and academic achievement, while promoting positive wellbeing and preparing learners for their future through a broad curriculum that includes academic, vocational and enrichment opportunities.

This is a full time role starting September and expected to continue until December on a full-time basis.

Required Skills and Experience
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Experience teaching Deaf pupils and supporting learners with Hearing Impairment (HI) in a specialist or inclusive setting.
  • Experience using or willingness to use British Sign Language (BSL) and/or Sign Supported English (SSE) to support communication (BSL skills are highly desirable).
  • Understanding of the communication, language and learning needs of Deaf young people, including those with additional SEND.
  • Excellent behaviour management and inclusive teaching practice.
  • UK school-based teaching experience.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or issued within the last 12 months.
  • Two excellent references.

  • £168.80 to £232.57 day rate, which equates to £32,916 to £45,351 per annum based on working 5 days a week for a full school year (dependent on experience).
