Teacher Pay Scales 2025–26: What You Need to Know About Your Salary From September

A 4% pay raise for teachers in England will take effect from September 2025, as confirmed by the Department for Education. This increase impacts classroom teachers across the main and upper pay scales, offering a welcome financial uplift for thousands of educators.

How Teacher Salaries Are Changing in 2025–26?

From September, teachers on the main pay scale will start on £32,916, up from last year’s starting salary of £31,650. The increase applies consistently across all steps of the main (M1–M6) and upper (U1–U3) pay scales.

Additional Payments for Responsibility

Teachers taking on additional responsibilities may be eligible for:

  • Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) Payments: These are fixed-amount supplements for duties such as leading a subject or mentoring staff. The amounts are also increasing by 4% for 2025–26.
  • SEND Allowance: Teachers supporting pupils with special educational needs receive a supplementary allowance, also set to rise in line with the 4% pay uplift.

What About Pension Contributions?

Teachers in state-funded schools are automatically enrolled into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme, with contribution rates ranging from 7.4% to 11.7% based on salary.
