Updated Early Years Qualification Checker Now Available

Friday, April 11, 2025

A new update to the Early Years Qualification Checker has been released by the Department for Education (DfE), making it easier for nurseries, primary schools, and early years settings to confirm if a qualification is approved as full and relevant in England.

This online tool is particularly useful for nurseries and primary schools across the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire who are looking to verify staff qualifications quickly and confidently.

What Does the Checker Do?

The Early Years Qualification Checker allows setting managers to:

  • Confirm whether an early years qualification achieved in the UK is approved by the DfE.
  • Check if the qualification holder can count in staff:child ratios at Level 2, Level 3, or Level 6.

What You'll Need to Use It

Before using the service, it’s helpful to have:

  • A copy of the qualification certificate
  • The qualification transcript (including a list of modules studied)

You’ll also be asked:

  • Where the qualification was awarded
  • When it was started and completed
  • The level and awarding organisation

Some qualifications may also include additional requirements, and the tool will let you know what these are and whether they’ve been met.

Ensuring staff meet the DfE’s full and relevant criteria is essential not only for compliance but for maintaining high-quality provision across the early years sector. With this updated checker, managers can now access clear guidance and make informed decisions faster—freeing up valuable time and reducing uncertainty during recruitment or audits.

You can begin using the updated service now via the GOV.UK website: Check an early years qualification
