How can Flourish Education help support you as an ECT?
So you’re graduating with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) this summer, but what next?
Being an Early Careers Teacher (ECT) can open many doors for you but it can also be extremely daunting, especially if you are unsure which year group you want to teach or which type of learning environment you want to teach in.
Once you qualify, an ECT typically has 3 routes available to them:
- A longer term, temporary teaching job
- Day to day supply
- A permanent teaching role
All three routes have different benefits depending on your own circumstances and Flourish Education can help you, no matter which route you decide to follow.
Benefits of long term, temporary teaching role as an ECT
This is a great way to gain experience and try out a year group before you commit. If the role lasted for at least one school term, then this contract could count towards your ECT induction as long as the school is willing to support you in this. You could choose to gain experience in 3 different schools, teaching 3 different year groups with all roles counting towards your ECT induction. This can look extremely appealing to any future employers as it shows you are adaptable and can work effectively in different learning environments and across year groups.
Many of our ECT teachers who go down this route, fall in love with a school and/or a year group and end up taking a permanent position at one of their placement schools and the school goes on to support their full ECT induction year.
Benefits of a permanent teaching job after graduating with Qualified Teaching Status (QTS)
Finding a permanent teaching job at a school that will support your ECT can be hugely rewarding. If you already know which year group you wish to teach and what learning environment you want to teach in, then finding a permanent teaching role at a school that will support your ECT could be the right route for you!
Benefits of Day to Day Supply as an ECT
Day to day supply is a fantastic way of getting valuable experience across a range of year groups from EYFS to Key Stage 2; in various schools and learning environments. If you are unsure which year group you want to teach or want to gain more confidence by teaching a variety of year groups without the additional pressure of lesson planning; then day to day supply teaching could be for you!
Day to day supply, also allows you to pick and choose the days you want to work and the schools you want to work at – giving you a great work/life balance whilst you find your feet in teaching or whilst you are looking for your first permanent teaching role.
